Sounds like your parents have more money than sense. In UK you would need a second mortgage to have a teenager on insurance for either car. Yes, you should be a hit with a TT and it's a better choice than than a Merc or BM.

Its a cool car but you should consider getting a BMW M3 Series! They are fast and you can modify them a lot! My friend has one and he had his M3 featured on a magazine last year.

I've never been in or around one but I know what they look like and I've seen video about them on youtube. As long as a car has good looks and a nice sound to it -which the Audi TT does- then people will be looking at you like your the "cool kid". I may not sound like a car expert (cuz I'm not) but Audi makes looking, & awesome sports cars. & yes, this car is very "sporty". And just to show you that I'm not a biased fanboy of Audi products, My favorite sports car is actually the Ford Mustang Boss 302, ( I guess you could say I'm a ford fanboy )
