I will be turning 18 in February and was interested in getting a car for myself. At the moment I drive a 2004 Nissan Sentra SE-R, which is actually my dad's and I just wanted to get my own car so I'm not responsible if something bad happens (which I must say has already happened when I park the car in a parking garage on campus). If I get my own car I will have to pay for it, and I will have to begin to pay for gas and insurance. So, I was just wondering which car would be the best in terms of reliability, maintenance, gas, fun, and anything else. Also I live in Ohio where it snows a fair amount so would it wise to even consider a turbo Mr2, and will a naturally aspirated Mr2 be as fun to drive as the del sol or miata?

Pretty much any car on this list is going to be an old beater that will not be best at anything.

The BMW may be the best car on the list. But there is something that must be strongly considered. This car is getting old. It would be very unrealistic to expect any old beater over 12 years old to be reliable, even an old BMW. The problem with the BMW is that it will be the most expensive of the bunch to repair. This car could very easily become a money pit.

As for insurance. Any vehicle that is sporty or fun to drive will be expensive for a young, inexperienced, male driver to insure. Be realistic and expect insurance on any of these cars to be expensive. Even if you get the minimum liability insurance. Do not expect insurance rates to be reasonable until you have at least 5 to 7 years of driving experience with a squeaky clean driving record. Get a ticket or an accident and the clock resets.

BMW

You'll get tired of those small two seaters real fast.

You might want to add a early 90's Capri to the list. It does have the advantage of being FWD.
If cost for insurance is a concern the Miata is more then likely going to have cheaper insurance rates of those cars listed with the possible exception of the Del Sol.
The Miata will be the easiest to find parts for and they are also easy to maintain. The problem is that Ohio has a very active SCCA section and you might find the prices a bit high because of the Miata Spec racers looking for cars.
Going on 15 years in a Miata, I am not tired of it yet. They replaced my TR-4's and don't look for me to sell one any time soon!
