do you believe that letting kids fire weapons and learn proper weapon safety at a young age (under 5 for the first time) is better then trying to shelter them from it? when you shelter someone from anything that only makes them want to do it more, its human nature. now they know nothing end hurt them self (i fired my first gun with my dad when i was 3, i don't even remember it, my son fired his first gun at 3 also, he is 5 now and can properly field strip his .22 faster then me!)
me and my dad and my son can shoot all day, have a grate time, but we (me and my dad) get so much crap for it, "he's to young" "you should teach him guns are a bad thing" why? guns don't kill people, people kill people the gun is a mindless object, it dose what its told. he's having fun im having fun, no one is getting hurt, so what is the big deal? why do people hate gun owner so much? and associate us all with "rednecks" its like saying everyone who golfs is a rich old white guy with a Bentley, now that is not true at all, is it?

I think it's great that you have found something you can do together. And that you are teaching gun safety. However, personally, I think 5 is too young. I would feel more comfortable with age 8.

holy crap i think 3 is way too young to shoot
but yea its a great way to bond but i would wait to age 6-7 to fire the gun (although i think its fine to expose him to it earlier)

Everyone has their own way of bonding. If it works for u, more power to u. My son is 8, and just now I'm barely allowing him to play with swords and rifles. I don't under any circumstances allow him to point the swords or rifles at anyone or thing and say he's going to kill it. He knows if he does that, it will b taken away and go in the trash.
All kids r different. I have a nephew who is just 2 months older than my son and he has been kicked out of 3 schools already for his violent behavior, talking about killing and pretending to kill. HE is not allowed to play with any pretend weapons wen he comes around. I think u should talk to ur son about the dangers and safety of weapons, wat is considered right and wat is considered wrong and wat the consequences will b.
Again, all kids r different, and if its working for u, good for u, there is nothing wrong with that.
I prefer building and painting to shopping as a pass time, if it works for me, r u going to tell me I'm wrong?... same thing.

Great for you
I think it is perfectly fine I believe the sooner the better
I started when I was 3 I shot a 20 gauge with a 3 inch shell it was a little much but I enjoyed it I have very much respect for guns I have payed for 2 of my own guns I used to go threw 600-800 rounds of a ammo a week payed for it all my self but I got into clay pigeons with a 12 gauge ammo expensive had to slow down but I am12 years old and I go outside with the 12 gauge and shoot clay pigeons by myself I knowhow to fieldstrip my gun and I always treatit like it is constantly shooting
So I believe it is great you have him shooting it teaches him from a young age heck I am 12 and know exactly how to treat a gun and I pay for all my supplies so go ahead give your boy the gun and do some plinking or hunting

You are a far thinking father. I think it is great that you are teaching your son about guns and gun safety.

I think the reason some people are so against teaching children about guns is because they are in denial - they think ignorance of guns will protect their children from the misuse of guns.

You cannot live your life or raise your son based on the ignorance of others. You have to do what you believe is right and will give your son the best chance in life. And the one thing that gives a man a better chance in life is knowledge - not ignorance.

People who hate gun owners are haters of many things. For all their pretense, at the heart of their argument is that they do NOT trust nor believe in individual responsibility. You should teach your son about these kinds of people because he will be encountering them all his life.

Funny you say that about rich old white folks with bentlys. The "Redneck" side of my family has a reunion every year and part of it is a golf tourney. After the golf we usually go back to the farm and shoot whatever guns are there (safely of course).

Now I plan on teaching my son to shoot the day he can say a full sentence. The day he is born I'm going to buy him a gun (22 of some sort) and give it to him when I believe he is ready.

Sorry I only said son, that applys to if I have a daughter too!

After reading the first sentance I said yes. I fired my first firearm at the age of four (I hardly remember it at all, but I know that it was a .22 pistol) From then on I was hitting cans with a daisy BB gun at age five and won two BB gun competitions in a row. From my beginning, I have been taught firearm safety. You should never shelter children from firearms, you should teach them the proper care and use of them so they don't go find one and shoot something/one.

My goodness you took the words right out of my mouth with that gun's don't kill thing! I have said that same thing a million times over!

Good luck and happy shooting!
