I starting shooting when I was around 14. It was a little late compared to when a lot of people start but at that age I was able to comprehend a lot more and soon become very knowledgeable about firearms as it had became my passion. Soon afterward I had started hunting and It definitely brought my father and I closer together due to the fact that we finally had something in common to share knowledge and stories about.

I waited till my kids were 8 years old before I let them fire a gun. Rifle only....... I do not see any reason to make them grow up too fast.....

I will say I did let them have toy guns when they were little and trained them not to point it at anyone.... They were rubber band guns.... They were so in the habit of NOT pointing them at each other that it was easier to get them trained with a real one......
