That is just the transmission gears moving, it is common in automatics that have bad transmission oil that needs to be changed.

Hard to tell without being there, but a clunk and nothing in either direction leads me to think it's the transmission input shaft. Sometimes this is the motor's crankshaft, but either way, it's going to be a lot of work to fix. Since it's AWD, it's not after the transmission, a condition where you might lose torque to one axle or the other, but losing all wheels makes me think it's in the transmission. Best of luck!!

loud clunk hugh?... well you might wana look at the tranfer case since is all wheel drive. i dealt with hummers before and i have heard that clunk before, if the tranfer case is messed up it wont send power to any of the wheels. As far as transmission fluid, my chrysler has had dirty and some times no tranny fluid, all it does is nothing it just loosees its gear ( no clunk) no nothing and does not move unles i really rubb up the engine allot. thats why i think your tranfer case might be shot. let me know please i would like to know what it is once you fied it..

Just had this same situation on my 1997 plymouth Breeze, but mine happened while going down the road at 45 mph. Everything was fine, then felt a sudden jolt along with a loud "clunk". The noise sounded like I threw a rod through the engine block, but the motor was fine. However, I lost all forward and reverse gears.
A friend of mine who works for a local transmission shop gave me some possibilities that happened. Those were:
1. torque converter went bad
2. input shaft failure
3. bad front pump
4. planetary gear failure

As with my transmission, yours is computer controlled and costly to repair.
