I have a 2003 Chrysler Sebring Convertible that has a vibration problem.?

Postby bertha » Sat Jan 14, 2012 3:17 am

It was really bad, now it's alright after I've replaced a few things, but still vibrates every second or two over 50 mph. I've had this car in 2 different shops. I replaced the tie rod end and looked over all suspension components myself. 1st shop replaced tires (they were pretty bad) and put brand new rims on it. Re-aligned the car, looked over suspension components and said everything was fine. Car had almost no vibration when I picked it up. within 2 - 3 days, the vibration came back. It's not real hard, but it seems to come from the rear b/c the steering wheel doesn't shake. You feel it in the body and can see the passenger seat shake a little. VERY ANNOYING! So I took it to another shop and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. It's never been in a major accident, so I don't think it would be the sub-frame. I'm just out of ideas and want to be easy on my wallet. I put brand new rotors and pads on all four wheels before all this so I know they're good too. Only vibrates over 50 and seems to calm down around 70. And it's not a constant vibration. It kinda goes in and out about every second. Vibrate - Smooth - Vibrate - Smooth, etc. Does anyone know much about this car or this kind of vibration that could help me out!?! I really need some ideas here. No noise or anything like that to suspect bearings. No other issues with driving the car o_0

A guy that needs help!!

Crappy tire(s). The belt(s) in the tires can shift/distort at speed and cause vibration issues.

double check:
* wheel balance and roundness on all four wheels/tires. Have the wheels spin balanced on the car.
* 4 wheel alignment, not just front or rear
* go through a car wash with an underside cleaning - could be something as simple as mud build up

Check the rear tires, you may have lost a wheel weight if it was okay after the tires were replaced. Has them balanced again.

REPLACE THE HARMONIC BALANCER IN THE ENGINE.
A harmonic balancer is connected to the front of the engine crankshaft and is designed to help reduce vibration. The harmonic balancer is comprised of two separate pieces, the first is the mass which connects to the crankshaft and the second is the energy dissipating element. These elements are separated by rubber insulator. The mass is designed to absorb vibration created from the crankshaft while in operation.Almost all vehicles are equipped with a harmonic balancer. Due to the stress and strain that is placed upon the harmonic balancer the unit sometimes crack . If upon inspection the harmonic balancer shows signs of weakness such as cracks, missing pieces or misplaced insulator you will need to replace IT.
