how can one car be faster than another with the same engine?

how can a stock 2001 alfa romeo 156, do 0-100 in 8.8 second. whilst a stock 2004 alfa romeo 147 with an identical engine only do 0-100 in 9.3 seconds?
how does this work?
the 147 is lighter as well???
both also have very similar top speeds (147, 208kms) (156, 214kms)

Other factors contribute to a car's speed or lack thereof, such as wind resistance and weight of the car and design of tires (friction).

I'd say it has a lot to do with driver skills.

power to weight ratio if one car is lighter it will go faster.
also the driver and reaction time

my guess would be the gearing of the transmission and differential. different gear ratios cause different acceleration rates. i would assume that the 156 is geared with a lower ratio, for acceleration, whereas the 147 has a higher gear ration, for a higher top speed.
