So i'm stumped on what to get. I don't know much about Audi as I like VW and BMW. Yes I go to school for automotive, but I want some help on what to get. I've heard that the B5 A4 automatic transmissions are no good, but what about the 5 spd? I don't want auto so i prefer manual. Should I get a 98 or so A4 and it will last? someone help me out.

your good, the 5 speeds are pretty robust. The only weak link is the clutches. People run the 1.8t up to 300whp on the stock tranny(not sure if they reinforce anything though). My 1.8t has 192k miles and the transmission shifts pretty smooth.

I have an 01 b5 with 5 speed auto, 156k no problems. The turbos are known to go bad, bearings, oil leaks into the airbox, so be careful. But overall Audis are the best affordable luxury sports car I have owned.
