94 land rover discovery good for off road, reliable?

Im interested in getting a vehicle for off roading.Mostly light off roading, nothing extreme.I never been off roading before and i live in california.
I have a chance of buying a 94 discovery with some body damage(front bumper),stick shift for $1500.Would it be a good, reliable vehicle off road?I dont care for minor things that can go wrong with these cars.Mostly interested in mechanical reliability,engine,transmission,etc...Im not an expert mechanic either, but im pretty handy, have a lot of tools and generally like working on cars.
What are the weak point of these cars? What should i watch out for when i go to check it out?Should i stay away from land rovers alltogether and just get a Toyota 4runner?

I look more in the line or Toyota or Jeep. Land rovers have a history of reliability just like BMW Jaguar, etc.. But when they break it can be costly for service and parts. $1500 sounds like a deal and might be but you have been warned.
